Master Bedroom
Details:
I love the way this room turned out! This room needed the most amount of demo and removal of old built-ins. As a result, it feels like the room is much larger. I wanted the room to be light, bright and cozy, with a mix of modern, artistic, and vintage.
When I bought the home:
The master bedroom was a blank canvas and had no lamps/lighting. The ceiling was vaulted, the light switch had no purpose, there were no curtains (but had two curtain rods), and there were lots of wooden cabinets (with interior dressers inside the cabinets). There was no door from the bedroom to the bathroom sink and closet area.
The Plan:
Remove the window rods and blinds, add more outlets, replace a plumbing line to the backyard (in the ceiling), add a security camera outside the window, update the TV cable wire in case I ever add a TV, add a light switch, remove the cabinets in the bedroom, replace the windows and add curtains/shades, paint the walls, add a standard door to the bathroom, and replace the floor.

Tips for buying bedroom pieces:
I owned a few vintage pieces before I started figuring out how this room would look (the rattan chair, the Grand Canyon poster, and the night stands were the first items in this room), and I decided that I really wanted a cognac-tan leather bed. After I had those pieces in place, I used Pinterest. Then, I was able to see how it would all look together with pillows, blankets, colors, and textures. I started down a path of browns, blacks, burnt orange, reds, and neutral colors for the accessories but then erred on the side of off-white and gray so it wouldn’t look like a 1970s bedroom with too much brown. A lot of the pieces were found at Target and the Crate and Barrel outlet in Carlsbad (tip: they carry CB2 outlet items too!). The chunky knit blanket was a really cool Target find, and the Target faux fur white blanket is one of my favorite blankets I’ve ever owned (it’s so soft).
One of the trickiest pieces to pick for the bedroom was lighting/lamps. Make sure that if you have heavy furniture (e.g. my night stands) to balance it with something simple/airy or the bedroom will feel heavy/dated.
